Ryukyu horse racing and maharashi continued from the Ryukyu Kingdom period until before the war, and the traditional culture of the Ryukyu Arc region competes not only for how fast horses run but also for their beauty. It was temporarily interrupted due to war, but in Okinawa Zoo & Museum, it was revived in 2013 for the first time in about 70 years in cooperation with regional groups. The event was suspended from 2020 due to infectious diseases, but it will be held in 2023, the 10-year milestone since revival. At the competition, horses gather from all over the prefecture, including remote islands, and compete for the beauty of running that unites humans and horses. There will also be various workshops and exhibitions where you can learn about Okinawan history and culture, and food stalls.
