Work explanation
“Shuri Gekijo (Movie Theater)” is the oldest movie theater currently existing in Okinawa. Since it opened in 1950, when the ravages of ground battles still remain, it has continued to operate for 72 years with almost no change in appearance. Initially, it was an indispensable community facility in an area where people gather, such as being used for movie screenings, Okinawan performing arts performances and events at neighboring schools, etc., but as the times changed, it changed to an adult movie center. It started again as a masterpiece theater in May 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the third director, Masanori Kinjo, suddenly died in April 2022. The theater was unexpectedly closed. Currently, research and future survival are being examined by volunteers. This is a short documentary depicting the history, present, and future of such “Shuri Gekijo (Movie Theater).”
