“Return to the motherland,” “return to the mainland,” “return to Japan,” “return to Okinawa”... The return of the Okinawan administration to Japan in 1972 is described in various ways, but many people in Okinawa call it “return.” The “fuki,” which echoes ambiguously as to where to return, seems to ooze a complex sentiment towards the history that Okinawa has walked.
QUALIA (qualia), which is Latin, is said to be a feeling based on subjective experiences, such as “feeling red” when you see a red apple. Now that 50 years have passed since “return,” 60% of people living in Okinawa have not experienced “return” firsthand. This exhibition introduces works and movements of artists that look at society “under American rule,” “return,” and “after the return.” Both those who have experienced a return and those who have not experienced it may feel Fukki Qualia from the work.
