Solo exhibition by Hiroji Yamada, who produces “slipwear” in Shigaraki-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture.

Slipware is a general type of pottery that is baked by decorating the surface of the vessel with a serous clay clay called slips. Although it has been made around the world since ancient times, British slipware from the 17th to 19th century is widely known. At that time the oven features rustic and funny patterns such as pie plates and pitchers used in everyday life It has been widely used as wear. However, its production has ceased since the industrial revolution.

The attempt to reproduce it was Bernard Reach, a British potter and later engaged in the folk art movement. His friend Shoji HAMADA (Living National Treasure) and Soetsu YANAGI, who later became the leader of the folk art movement, became obsessed with slipwear and brought his outstanding works to Japan. The beauty of slipwear, which was a daily instrument, was found in Japan in the 20th century.

In the process of slipwear in England in the 18th century, Yamada is interested in how craftsmen at that time were facing production. Yamada's work on production with familiar raw materials and kilns are exhibited.
