Tomomi Taninoue has a mother from Urasoe City. My grandmother, who still lives in Urasoe, lost eight parents, brothers and sisters in an instant in the Battle of Okinawa, and escaped alone. I decided to produce this stage in order to convey the importance of life and the importance of peace that my grandmother connected with.
We will appeal human rights, the preciousness of life, the importance of peace, and human love throughout the country and the world through the play, including conveying “Live Your Own Way,” which is Taninoue's own life work.
In producing the script, Taninoue learned a lot of things by taking the time to trace the site of the Battle of Okinawa, cattails, and castles, together with playwright Miyu Higuchi and a local Okinawa guide. Also, I took the time to listen to my grandmother who survived the fierce battle and was taken prisoner while there was a strong feeling that “it should never be weathered” and the conflict “I want to forget it.” A documentary is the basis of the stage script. Since Yanoue himself is also a “returning child” born in the year of the return of Okinawa, the Okinawa premiere was decided to be in June 2022, when there is a memorial day for the 50th anniversary of the return of Okinawa, and the performance will be held.
